The original Guitar Legend problem was a game bug, not a hidden repair step. Launch-week players could clean and paint the guitar, buy the best software they could find, and still see a message saying that firmware could not be updated on that device. MyPod owners reported the same dead end. The developer acknowledged the failure in the Steam discussion instead of pointing players toward another upgrade.

That launch defect was fixed in v1.0.009r on August 11. ReStory kept changing after that patch. The August 21 v1.0.013r note says the firmware mechanic now works on gamepad, alongside new gamepad tooltips and a dialogue-selector fix. Old forum replies still appear in search, so confirm the version before buying another toolkit or discarding an order.

The September 18 source check also found developer-confirmed hotfix 1.0.015 for a guitar-story progression block. That is separate from the firmware fixes described here. The next free content update is planned for September 21; the version center keeps that announcement separate from released fixes.

1. Close ReStory and open its Steam Library page.
2. Let any pending download finish, then launch the game again.
3. Record the installed version; firmware-related fixes were confirmed in v1.0.009r and v1.0.013r.
4. Reload the affected order only after the new build is running.

Complete the firmware task in the right order

Read the customer card before touching the computer. Firmware is one line in a larger job, and the device may also need cleaning, paint, or replacement parts. Take the hardware apart, clean it, replace the pieces that fail inspection, and reassemble it. A firmware tool does not excuse a loose screw or an unfinished paint requirement.

With the hardware work stable, use the shop computer and open the software tool that handles device firmware. Select the matching device or job when the interface offers it, run the update, and wait for the task to finish. Return to the repair view and check the order card again. Do not hand the device back merely because the software window closed; the order is ready only when the requested firmware line and the physical repair lines are complete.

What patch 1.0.013r changed for controllers

Patch 1.0.013r contains the first official line that connects the firmware mechanic to controller input: "Updating firmware mechanics now working on gamepad." The same note adds gamepad tooltips and fixes the dialogue selector. That is useful evidence for a player who can navigate the repair bench with a controller but loses the firmware action at the computer.

The note does not certify every controller, Steam Input layout, or Steam Deck configuration. It tells us that gamepad support for this mechanic was deliberately repaired. Update first and retest with the current controller prompts. If mouse input works while the same order fails only on gamepad, include that comparison in the bug report rather than describing the whole firmware system as broken.

Why buying a higher toolkit did not solve the launch bug

Several early replies assumed that the Guitar Legend needed a more expensive toolkit. That was a plausible guess because ReStory uses licenses and tools to gate some jobs, but it did not fit the evidence. Players reached the same error after upgrading, and the developer classified the behavior as a bug. The official patch note later named the affected devices directly.

A required upgrade and a broken device definition can look identical from the player side: both stop a button from working. The difference is what the order and computer actually say. If the game names a tool or license you do not own, follow that requirement. If an up-to-date build says the device itself cannot be updated even though the order explicitly asks for firmware, capture the message. Buying every software tier again is not a useful diagnostic test.

If an older order is still stuck after updating

Keep the original save and make a separate copy before experimenting. Then reopen the device, confirm it is fully assembled, and compare every order line with the work already done. A partially completed paint or repair task can leave the job blocked for a reason unrelated to firmware. If the firmware line itself remains incomplete, save, return to the title screen, and reload once under the patched build.

Steam's Verify integrity of game files option is a reasonable next check if the version is current but the interface is missing or damaged. Verification replaces local program files; it does not prove that an order created on an older build has a healthy state. Avoid deleting the save or repeatedly buying tools. Those actions remove useful evidence without isolating the failure.

1. Photograph or screenshot the order card and the exact firmware message.
2. Write down the device model, game version, input method, toolkit level, and whether the order began before the patch.
3. Test one clean reload while keeping the original save untouched.
4. If the same error survives, report those details in ReStory's Steam technical forum or official Discord.

Separate the fixed launch defect from a new report

The August 11 note is solid evidence that the known Guitar Legend and MyPod defect was patched. The August 21 note is solid evidence that gamepad handling was repaired later. Neither statement promises that every firmware order will always work. A reproducible failure on a current build deserves a new report instead of being folded into a launch-week thread.

Include the exact device, order wording, build number, input method, and last action that worked. Say whether the order started before or after the patch. A post that only says "firmware broken" leaves other players guessing between the old device bug, a missing tool, an unfinished repair, a controller-only problem, and a new regression.

Use the patch history as a troubleshooting checklist

The community threads record the original symptom clearly: the job requested firmware while the software rejected the same device. Players tested higher tool tiers and compared device families, which helped separate a broken definition from a missing purchase. The official patch then named Guitar Legend and MyPod directly. The later gamepad fix gives controller players another clean comparison to make.

Use that history as the model. Check the build, follow the order literally, change one thing at a time, and preserve the save. Test mouse and gamepad separately if input appears relevant. Stop when the game, rather than the repair, is the obvious problem. A broken order should not consume the shop balance just to prove the most expensive button still does nothing.
